One Last Breath
“Time to go to sleep”
Your words, your last words”
These words
One year old, yet completely unforgettable,
They ring in my ears
You say you’ll always be near
But yet these words don’t stop my tears.
These words you utter with some of your final breaths
They’re like somber gray clouds of smoke
drifting from my cigarette,
ghostly smog transformed from a living breath.
It just shows how quickly beauty
is turned to ugliness.
And one moment is all it takes,
One moment to render me breathless cause the moment that you took your last breath
I’ve fallen into this shadowy rhythm.
Because everything has become so distorted
And every breath that I take
It’s just one step closer to the last
And every move we make
Fells like we’re just pieces on a chess board edging closer to the end.
And I don’t want to let you go,
to watch you slip through my fingers like smooth grains of sand
And I would like to hold my one last breath tightly inside my chest,
Just waiting for a chance to press through my lips.
