January Heartbreak
As the sun awakens a new day,
Enter a pair happily together
Laughing, hand-in-hand.
A fleeting beating of hearts
Fluttery and excited,
Wading in the waters of a thrilling romance.
One heart beats for you,
Imagining a far off kingdom
Ruled by just the two of us.
It thought that destiny had brought them together,
Foolishly believing it was meant to be.
It thought that no other person that ever took a breath this planet’s air
Could come anywhere near where you’ve been.
It thought it would last forever,
But the cruel realities of life thrust down
Like Zeus crashing lightning upon the innocent Earth.
For little did my heart know
That yours beat for someone else
And not for me.
Now those bright sunny days are over.
The world has turned dark and cold.
And that fleeting beating of hearts
Was no longer a pair anymore.
Now a violent storm thrashes within my chest
Raging crushed fantasies and heartbreak.
At nights I lie awake,
Tossing and turning with salty tears in my eyes,
And wonder what was so wrong about me.
I watch the clock with blurred eyes as the hours slip by,
Still helplessly dreaming of what could have been.
