I do not study science because I find it useful, I study it because I delight in it. I delight in science because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, and if nature were not worth knowing, life would not be worth living.

I am trapped in an eight by eight world.
Black and white squares dominate my life.
Infinite combinations complex my mind.
Placing me in great intellectual strife.

I see my opponents approach me
With great hatred in their eyes
My brethren and I line up
Seeking nothing but their demise.

The weakest of us pointlessly charge
Pushing the battle to control the field.
It is such a terrible sight for my eyes
To see them sacrifice themselves on the battlefield.

Looking to my side I see the philosopher,
The most enlightened of us all.
He sees far in every direction
A great many, to him, will fall.

He is the most feared piece
Many will avoid his might.
Strong Achilles will succumb to his weakness,
One exploited by the specialized knight.

The knight sees in a unique way.
He sneaks towards with a knife. An assassin in the black of night.
With a purpose of ending life.

The clergy men flank the sides,
Tearing apart like a cleaver.
They rip the battle in half.
Indeed a very grim reaper.

The rooks have incredible strength,
Their sight and control is long.
They bring fear upon the enemy
An ironically unparalleled headstrong

All that is left is me,
The selfish monarch on the throne.
A travelling sacrificial altar.
I am always, at the end, alone.

But perhaps we are all pawns at the hands of a selfish God.
Making us serve his divinity.
Moving only under his command.
A prisoner to the trinity.

I really love chess and one day I started thinking about how deliciously brutal the sport is.
It is like a glorious battle of mind and soldier. A battle worthy of poetry and lore.
