After You
I look into your eyes to find regret,
sadness,
jealousy,
But all I see is my own disillusioned gaze.
Am I just another memory to you?
A small figment of nostalgia when you see my face?
Even when washed with time,
On my lips, linger the tender feelings of yours,
Accentuating the bitter taste of our last words.
I stand up to you to see what’s changed,
To understand,
To feel,
But all I hear is the sound of your static heartbeat.
You’re different,
but somehow the same,
a stranger I know in and out.
You were once so familiar and clear,
but now so foreign and vague.
What did I do?
I touch your arm to show I care,
that I’m still here,
that I’ll always be here,
But all I feel is the coldness as you give way.
You’re impressed into my being,
engraved into my spirit,
embossed into my mind,
Scars of our sentimental love.
That passionate fire has burned out,
and the ashes taint my heart;
never again, to be clean.
And ashes are all I will ever be in yours,
Remnants of something long forgotten.
Is that all I am?
A bad dream left to be forgotten?
I miss your brilliant smile,
I miss the spring you brought into my step,
I miss your reassurances,
I miss your embrace,
I miss you.
But you’ll never miss me.
