You Think I Don't Know?

They tell me I need to stop straightening my hair,
That I'll end up with burnt out locks.
They tell me he doesn't care.

Don't you think I know by now?
He's told me a thousand times.
But, I want to look good for him.

They tell me I need to eat more,
That he doesn't look at the scale.
That it's going to kill me one of these days.

Wouldn't I know?
I've 'only' been with him for over two months.
If he really did, do you think he'd be holding my hand?
No.

Daddy is drunk when he tells me I'm stressing myself,
And Momma is high when she tells me
Cold turkey isn't working for me.

But I don't want him to smell the smoke.
To taste it on my breath.
I don't want him to wrinkle his nose
When he finds the empty pack.

So, you don't think I know every word you're telling me?
You're wrong.
Because, I'm smart enough to know how to change,
For better or for worse.

I wrote this because I'm having trouble convincing everyone that my boy friend is right for me.
