It Does Affect Me
My whole life I’ve heard horror.
My parents don’t believe they should shelter me,
Think it makes me stronger.
I can tell you first hand, I don’t think it does.
Stories of war,
Stories of violence,
Stories of abandonment:
Where does it end?
Could this be me?
I push those thoughts out,
Refuse to set them free.
If I don’t think about it, it will go away.
Right?
Swirling in my head,
Memories I decline to remember,
Always there,
Always tormenting.
I guess they make me stronger,
That’s what the world wants me to think.
“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
Yeah, getting bitten by a mosquito has totally changed my life.
I use humor everywhere.
Makes me feel more secure,
I don’t want to talk about.
It does affect me.
