A caged bird, bright and blue
sings away, but no one knew.
She sang even though it was dark.
She sang even though she wasn't a lark.
She didn’t know if anyone would hear
that song that she held oh so dear.

The cage was cold,
with only herself to hold.
She could hear other birds off in the distance
but never met any other existence.
She would fly up to her cold, iron perch,
but never came an end to her search.

She threw herself up against those solid, steel bars,
but she never got far.
The nights were the worst
where her heart seemed to burst.
There seemed no end to this hell she was in,
little did she know what was about to begin.

From up in the sky came this big booming sound,
and suddenly a shiny, gold key fell to the ground.
A voice followed the key and it seemed to say;
“Be free from your chains my sweet, tiny blue jay”.

She gathered the key and flew to the lock,
thinking only what this cage would no longer block.
She turned the key, and with a clattering grumble,
the lock unhinged and fell with a tumble.

On a bright summer day you can hear the blue bird’s song,
she gives hope to all Caged birds; they won’t be caged long

The author's comments:
As a class, we recently read the novel "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", by Maya Angelou. This is my reaction to her piece.
