"We accept the love we think we deserve." -The Perks of Being a Wallflower

One day,
you’ll learn
the veil of innocence will evaporate
society will knock you down
time after time
you’ll hear lies
horrible rumors
every time you turn on the television
every time you open a magazine
society will be there
perched in the shadows
anticipating
waiting for the exact moment
tick tock
tick tock
then it will strike
digging its claws into flesh
spreading like a virus
embedding itself
it will itch under your skin
forming a disease
one worse than any other
the deadliest of deadliest sicknesses
so strong it will rip you in half
from head to toe
it will bring you to your knees
as you fight back tears
refusing to let the urge overcome
you’ll start to believe
your hair is too curly
and it isn’t long enough
not to mention
you have split ends on top of split ends
your skin is too pale
and your freckles are ugly
your hips are too wide
and your breasts are too small
no matter what
you can change yourself
time after time
but you will never be good enough
not in the eyes of society
but society’s definition of perfection is corrupt
there is beauty in flaws
big or small
when society comes knocking
I hope you stand tall
with your head held high
and a smile that puts LED lights to shame
because you are you
and in the eyes of our savior
you don’t have to change
not one single thing
because in His eyes you already are perfect
you’re the grandest creation to ever walk the Earth

The author's comments:
I wrote this poem while thinking about my little sister. She's going through that tough stage in middle school when everyone bullies each other. She's self conscious of little things that I don't understand. When I look at her I don't see just my little sister. I see a beautiful, intelligent, and humorous girl. It breaks my heart to see her cry over societies definition of perfection.
