On Butterflies' Wings
he pulled me into his arms,
 coaxing me with
 the way his hands moved
 and his breathing,
 begging me to trust him
 while I struggled
 to control my heartbeat
 and the butterflies' wings
 were laced with fear.

he held his lips close to mine
 keeping his promise
not to start me on the road
 to another heartbreak
 with rash, wasted kisses,
 while I suppressed
every urge to close the void
 between lips and lonely souls
 and the butterflies' wings
 were laced with desire.

he held my head to his chest,
 tangling his fingers
 in my hair and pressing
 his lips to my forehead,
 strictly friendly,
 as he slipped away
with a smile that finally reached his eyes,
 while i sang a song
in my head that fit the moment,
 and the butterflies' wings
 were laced with promise.
