Happily Ever After
I thought I knew
How life was supposed to go
Boy meets girl, gets married
Buys cute little house at the end of the road
Live happily ever after
I lived in a world of laughter
Knowing one day my prince would come
We’d fall in love and marry
But my fairytale never begun
It ended before it could start
When you sat us kids down
And broke our hearts
“It isn’t your mom’s fault,
It’s all mine”
Tears in your voice were like
trees riddled with vines
Crawling up your throat
And suffocating your lines
“I’m going to go away”
Words a woman’s prince
Is never supposed to say
So I had to redefine
Happily ever after
No more long warm hugs
No more laughter
And the prince?
He’s supposed to treat you
Like you don’t matter
Until one day
You came to me
Drying your eyes
“Don’t you see?”
You asked me
“You’re not me
You’re everything I couldn’t be
You’re a light to the world
You’re my daughter
But you’re never just a girl
And you deserve
So much more”
