A lone mango tree stands,
Old and ragged and weathered,
But calm and content,
Through the tyranny of nature.

It once took root among many,
A bountiful forest,
A shelter for all,
A source of life.

Time and tide rolled by,
And one by one they fell,
Burdened by greed and grain,
Until one lone mango tree stood.

But resolute it remains,
As strong as a forest,
Giving and giving,
The sweet fruits of labor.

The author's comments:
I wrote this poem for my Joy Luck Project in English. Basically, what we had to was to interview one of our grandparents and find out a little about their past- their passions, talents, etc. We had to create a narrative and a few poems and this was the one of the poems I wrote. It is metaphorical for my grandfather, who is perhaps one of the most generous men I have ever met. As soon as he finished medical school, he began to work at local community hospital around India, helping out those in need. Though this poem doesn't truly do justice to the accomplishments he has made, I hope it conveys a little about him.
