Broken wings try vainly to pick you up

Your frenzied cries alert Him to stop

Please, you beg, don’t come this way

Yet here He comes, a dubious renege

The space grows closer between Him and you

Your inner boy soldier plays the drums for two

Stand your ground, you think, I won’t fail this time, I-

But it’s too late to prepare, He’s coming your way

To you: chameleon whose raider is inches afar

Unknowingly deer and lion, apart yet on par

He smiles and you wave, cursing under your breath

Silent tears fall as His words caress your face

This, for some reason, the highlight of your day

Smiling on the outside, while inside you’re gray

You hug Him goodbye, you say your farewells

Can’t help but go limp as his strut leaves your ears

You open your journal, another line struck

How many chances will you get and mess up?

You gather your courage, you stand up, and tall

This time you’ll tell Him, once and for all

You find Him and roar as you heart tells you to

To a hesitant audience, not sure what to do

He brushes it off as a cute little joke

Between two guys with a lifetime’s worth of camaraderie and support

But He can’t hear you in His unwitting bliss

He passes you by, your hand brushes His

Your effort for naught as your heart falls to its knees

The third time this day, the third time you speak

You say you won’t try again; you’ll forget what this is

Because a heart can’t fly away on two broken wings

Hopefully, this poem captures what it's like to have unrequited feelings for the same sex.
