I Hope You See Me
You’re a poet
Lithe hands that dance across the sky
Cheeks that turn red, lips laughing at the dance of the stars
You taught the planets how to leap and bound across space
You taught my heart to beat and tap a song against my chest
And you wonder if I ever think about you, pray about you
You wonder if I still believe in you
Honey, you know I do.
Tears may of have blurred my eyes, but not my vision
I see it like a prophecy
That night may have pulled us under
But I know that we’re not over
Maybe I can’t come to grips with losing you for good
I was barely angry, things got crazy, but I think you misunderstood
We’ll do all those things we said we would
I don’t like to throw plans away
We just needed some time to grow up
I needed some time to mature
And it’s stupid, I know
I was stupid
That night was stupid
But I’m looking to that bright future we always dreamed about
You’d laugh if you saw me now
Same poofy hair and rough hands and dark chocolate eyes
But there’s some kind of revolution happening in me
And I just wish you could be here to see
I don’t know if it’s bad or if it’s good, but it’s tossing me about
It’s making me free
I read a poem you wrote
Your words carried me across the page
I wanted to cry and laugh and dance and sing
But I just sat there staring, a hand over my mouth
I didn’t have to see your face to face to know
You’re growing more beautiful as the years go by
So just know I love you
And I’ll see you sometime in the distant future
I hope
I pray
You’ll see me too
