America, Land of Beautiful Faults
We are built on rising mountains
Where accomplishments grow
With innocent ease
Opportunities cling to the ends of trees,
And joy leaps from the same branches.
But we are a New World
With wrinkles.
With lines stretching
And arching
And snarling
Just under our ageing surface.
Land full of voids and cracks
In which freedom falls,
Money takes us,
Morality escapes us,
And education sleeps idly by the side.
But perhaps like the great canyons
We plant pride in,
These deep faults are
Where our beauty truly lies
While liberty deeply sighs,
From the canyon wall,
watching.
