Stares at me blankly, knowingly,
Eyes boring holes into my soul,
Taunting me with mocking grins,
Knowing the secrets I desperately hide.

Ghosts passing through me
Make my heart freeze like ice.
My spirit goes numb; words evade me
Like feeling escapes frost bitten fingers.
No way to feel, nothing to feel;

The author's comments:
This is a rather grim portrayal of the past. The "ghosts" of one's past can haunt them to varying extents, until the past consumes the person and takes over his or her identity. The last three lines are somewhat open to interpretation. The meaning of the ghosts "clawing their way to the surface" is not apparent and leaves the reader to decide for him or herself what the ending truly means. This open-ended nature of the poem is conveyed through the lack of punctuation of the last line.
