Crime of Contentment

Depression is a vile beast
that floods your mind
with her hostile presence
drowning you with no more than
a silent whisper

As if some kind of celestial switch
a flicker of light before your eyes
you find yourself blinded
completely immersed in absolute darkness

She announces her stay at the front desk
without declaring a form of pay
she creeps through every corridor
disguising herself as dust on your windowsill
peering over your shoulder like a pesky fly
that refuses to be swatted

She is in every breath, mostly because
she hopes to be the reason for your last one

The author's comments:
Having struggled with clinical depression for quite some time now, I feel as though depression is something that isn’t always understood by those who have not experienced it. As I began to meet other people who are fighting a similar battle, I learned of depression on both sides – from being depressed, and from having people in my life who are depressed. I took this inner demon and released it in the form of poetry, describing depression to the best of my ability, so as to give others a taste of what this battle has been like for me.
