we promised

Known each other since we were eight
Pretend and family
Were our favorite games
When we fell on our faces we’d laugh
And get back up
Growing up was not an option
Because we pinky promised
To be friends forever
I told you my secrets
I could trace your scars
We are just sisters from other misters
We promised to share wrinkle cream and grow old
And when we married the celebrities on our walls
We would be mansion neighbors
That was the dream
That’s what we promised

At the age when laughing and lovin’ were real
And the world seemed so beautiful through the eyes of little girls with tutus
The brick wall hit us hard
But we walked through it hand in hand
Because we promised

We would cancel times
We made for each other
Because the kids came first
The hubbies came first
But we still talked for hours
When life seemed tough eating cookie dough ice cream
Discussing law and order episode number 13
We never drifted too far
Because the waves crashed and swayed
To our advantage
And I seemed like even Neptune god of the sea
Knew our promise
You promise to hold me when I cried
The day my father died
You came and told me
“Honey tomorrows sunshine will be his smile begging you to go on
And the rain will be him saying goodbye one last time
In your dreams he’ll hold your hand
And you will know that one day you will be with him again
I’ll dry your tears
Now and forever
Because I promised
Because we promised
And I always keep my promises”
