Was being a hero ever worth it?
To try and help, but be condemned?
I’m kinder than the world is
But that never means anything in the end.
I made my choices and said my prayers.
I had the right intentions.
Yet I was still the one left, asking for redemption.

Go ahead and run me over –
I’d rather be part of the pavement
Than torn apart with torment.
Never again will I try my hardest
For someone else, because it was never worth it.
I’m burning my cape and letting go,
Because it’s a thankless job, being a hero.

Were all the threats ever real?
Were they empty or the truth?
I wish I was the Man of Steel, ‘cause maybe then I wouldn’t have to feel
All the fear of having a heart and still needing proof.
I made my choices and said my prayers,
I had the right intentions,
Yet I was still the one left asking for redemption.

Go ahead and run me over –
I’d rather be part of the pavement
Than torn apart with torment.
Never again will I try my hardest
For someone else, because it was never worth it.
I’m burning my cape and letting go,
Because it’s a thankless job, being a hero.

The author's comments:
I wrote this poem after helping a friend who ran away from home because she was being abused but once she got the help she needed and had everything go better for her - she forgot all about me. I was nothing to her. I never sacrificed my name and family for her, even though we nearly had charges pressed for doing so. No. And whenever I asked for a small favor, she wanted nothing to do with me even after I put her life back on track for her.
