My father described
A way of life
That had now disappeared
It was more than a building
Of sooty-faced men
Working long hours
In factories that operated day and night
Operating machinery
It became a way of life
To live in the shadow of the mills
Where the townscape was dominated by
Rectangular brick built mills
He described his intentions clearly
“We came here to work … we had no intentions of staying here permanently”
“Instead we stayed”
That was all he had to say on the matter.
