Overestimating the Resiliency of a Tree Branch

I hooked my hat on a branch bending in the water
The slight tug of the current tore the tree from its’ roots.
My hat dunked below the surface,
Drips wicking up the brim like desultory sparks.
I let it feather to the bottom. The branch
Floated past me—
Destined to lap up on some shore
Or snare among a cluster of rocks.
It bobbed downstream—
Twigs and leaves chipping off;
Another stave of driftwood.

This is about a time when a friend of mine let me down. Except in this, he's a lame tree branch.
