"Most of what people think and believe and a lot of their quotes comes from what others have said. Funny thing is is that I think I'm the only one who's said this".

you told me
you loved me
one night
long ago

I didn't know
if I should
believe you
laugh
or cry

you trusted me
with your hopes
dreams
and darkest secrets
and I
did not know what to say

you turned to me
telling me
of your love
and you say
I saved your life

I told you
that I
would stand by you
forever

what you didn't know

I was afraid
not of you
but of myself

I didn't think
I could help
only hurt

I wanted to
run
away from you
away from this

instead
I ignored my fears
and pulled you closer

today

even while wondering
will I let you down
will I hurt you
by holding you
too close

even while afraid
of what we
may become

I will
stand by you

At first glance this is a poem about a relationship but this is a poem for anyone who's talked to a friend about the very real possibility of suicide. The "love" mentioned in this poem is also friendship.
