It's just who we are
Everyone is staring with eyes so wide
Not knowing that to us it’s not all about pride
This is our job, it’s just who we are
But today it’s almost like we’re rock stars

We grab all our gear and start our procession
Towards the towers with focused expressions
Hundreds of us go up the stairs to search
Its times like these that make me wish I went to church

All around the smoke is getting thicker
Still no one in sight, my hopes start to flicker
Higher and higher a group of us climb
Who could commit such a horrible crime?

I can hear so many sounds, voices calling 9-1-1
I try to get there faster but these suits, they weigh a ton
We kick down doors and mumble quick prayers
And finally we reach those people upstairs

I send a group of survivors down with two of my best
I say “hurry up” because for time we are pressed
The fire is spreading fast and so close
It’s leaving a burning that I can feel through my toes

Everyone’s out so I head for the door
Until I feel a great shaking that brings me to the floor
The ceiling moans and starts to cave in
There’s nothing I can do, this is the end

Debris piles on me as I tumble down
But all I can think about is the people on the ground
As long as their safe, as long as their okay
Then I can close my eyes and let this world slip away.
