My feet move along a road well worn,
a pair,
one of many,
each one chasing the other,
slowly,
through the darkness.

I have no guide –
only my conscience,
which can be misleading.
unaware of why I left,
why I chose to travel this path.

I meet many obstacles:
another fork in the road,
another twist
or turn.
But these do not bring me down.

I continue to wind,
slowly
through the darkness,
not caring about what’s behind me,
only focused on the faint light
that I can see,
shining,
at the end of the tunnel.

I create my own light.
I find ways to
shine,
glow,
and shimmer.

And when I stop to rest,
I am reminded
only that I must keep moving
forward.

Sometimes I wonder
why I have come,
why I embrace
the darkness that greets me.

Was it the promise of happiness
at the end of my journey?
Or maybe I was
fleeing
from the threat
of my past
that used to loom over me.
A rain cloud,
about to burst,
and make the past
the present.

But then I decide
that I left because
I knew that I had to.
I had to travel this road,
as so many did,
as so many are,
and as so many will.

My feet move along a road well worn,
a pair,
one of many,
each one chasing the other,
slowly,
through the darkness.

I do not look back.
