I may not be an athlete
But that won't stop me from playing
Even if I can't score the winning goal
I refuse to sit on the sidelines.
I love the thrill of the chase.

I may not be a chef
But that won't stop me from cooking
Even if it burns and curdles
I refuse to live off a microwave.
I love to eat my own food.

I may not be a linguist
But that won't stop me from learning
Even if I speak broken Espanol
I refuse to resort to Spanglish.
I love the ability to comprehend.

I may not be a pilot
But that won't stop me from trying
Even if I end up dreaming forever
I refuse to be told it's hopeless.
I love the imaginary flight.

I may not be a star
But that won't stop me from acting
Even if I'm dreadful and forget my lines
I refuse to restrict myself to the audience.
I love the feeling of someone else.

I may not be a butterfly
But that won't stop me from talking
Even if I have trouble making friends easily
I refuse to have my social life be dictated.
I love the freedom of friends.

I may not be a composer
But that won't stop me from humming
Even if I can't really play
I refuse to do only others' music.
I love the rhythms and notes.

I may not be the hero
But that won't stop me from standing
Even if my stomach trembles and I'm afraid
I refuse to discard my beliefs.
I love when I can be brave.

I may not be a poet
But that won't stop me from writing
Even if I sound stiff or childish
I refuse to stick with fiction.
I love to know what I think.

I may not be the greatest
But that won't stop me from doing
Even if I'm completely awful
I refuse to give up because of it.
I love to move for fun.

I finally figured out why I write poetry even if I do better in other areas of writing. I was so happy at the discovery, I had (of course) to write a poem. :)

There's this kid at my school who has a certain swagger when he walks--he's flamboyantly gey, is in every school play, and i know when i look at him that he will be one of my generation's icons, if he isn't killed in a hate crime. you have the same swagger in your writing. you have the confidence in yourself to be who you are. this is rare. Don't disappear anywhere--and for the last time, get published.

I love when people write poetry that others can relate too. I love writing poetry, but i don't think im that good. Your poem makes me want to write even when i feel like i can't.

I absolutely loved this poem...It's like saying that almost anyone won't be the best, but they can still be the best for themself.. They can be proud of themselves with whatever they do...I really enjoyed reading this!

I love the message of this poem! so many people give up on what they love to do because they can't be the "best" at it and thats such a shame. I suck at most things including writing poetrybut that doesn't stop me!lol Its nice to have found a kindred spirit!

Wow.  I like it alot, and can relate in so many of the areas.  I might have to quote you: "I may not be a poet, but that won't stop me from writing."  Amazing line, and one that will remain in my mind.  Keep writing, because I know you will, ♥Rae
