Words
Words
Words
Words have the power to create
To destroy
To plunge deep within you, grasp at your blazing core
Turn you inside out and ignite you
Bring you higher and higher and higher until you can't breathe or even speak
Your rib cage is shattering beneath the very weight
Then it breaks you in half as you descend back.
You see how these words practically attacked you?
The very meaning of language is to communicate
Yet we human beings can't use our minds that way
Heat seeking missiles, IEDs, sniper clad tanks
Some say words cannot compare to these tools of destruction
Although I don't tend to notice
Because long before man used warfare to wager their differences
We used art and poetry to literally thrive in,
To express our deepest emotions and doubt
Although I now know nothing of the industrious ways of words
The syllables pour out of my mouth in waves of confusion
And the vowels cry out to be taken and cradled
And they pound and scream bloody rhymes in your ears
But you hear nothing, my attempts have no comprehension
You're a casualty of the never-ending nonverbal war
And I'm just a wordsmith mercenary,
Just pleading to be heard

The author's comments:
I can distinctly remember watching the countdown to the War on Terror on CNN. I was eleven years old in fifth grade. All this time I never thought I'd have half of my best friends enlisted and fighting overseas.
Meanwhile, I can't support them the way I used to. I'm stuck over here fighting my own war on terror and I'm trying to make due with the weapons I have. I'm not in Special Ops or a highly trained professional like them. All I have is my words and I'm learning to get by with just that.

Isn't it ironic? We ignore the ones who adore us, adore the ones who ignore us, love the ones who hurt us, and hurt the ones that love us.

I think we all fight this battle everyday. I'm glad you can put it to words
