"The funny thing about sacrifice is that sometimes, when you think you're losing something, you're actually just passing it on to someone else."

And I miss him while he's gone.
Once holding me...
He was five and a half to the day.
I was just born.
Yet he was holding me
with the strength and love of a man.

And I miss him while he's gone.
Once making plush puppies dance...
I would laugh.
And he would laugh with me.
Yet the fun was only beginning, like the clearing of fog on an April morning.

And I miss him while he's gone.
Once climbing up willow trees...
I was getting stronger.
And he was getting older.
Yet the innocence remained as if we were doused in sweet cream.

And I miss him while he's gone.
Once kicking soccer balls...
I was Daddy's little star.
And he was Daddy's big pain.
Yet we were parallel in each other's eyes with the humility of shelter hounds.

And I miss him while he's gone.
Once shrieking curse words...
I was an iron tomboy.
And he was his own puzzle.
Yet the pieces fit better with every attempt to find the coziest skin.

And I miss him while he's gone.
Once speaking through the stage...
I was full of angst.
And he was acting.
Yet honesty was an act portrayed in the sense that a mother pretends to worry.

And I miss him while he's gone.
Once saluting authority...
I was glad to see him.
And he was giddy to see her.
Yet what love overpowers that of two people whose lips smile like twins?

And I miss him while he's gone.
Now a patriot of independence...
I am young.
He is becoming him.
Yet the Monterrey water splashes through his heart and rushes to mine.

Parted by no obstacle.
Stopped by no force.
Replaced by no person.
Forgotten by no thought.

Siblings by a miracle.

This is about my older brother who has always been my mentor and biggest influence. He is currently serving as a linguist for the United States Air Force in Monterrey, California. I love him and miss him, and I appreciate the constant contact we keep.
