to live
is to live eternally.

to live in the asylum of the lost
to live with guilt and pain
to forget my faith
and neglect my hope is

still living.
and living eternally.

i know what i have done
i know where i am going
and i know who i will meet.
i will know the master of death but yet i am

still living
and living eternally.

i will reside among the ashes
i will walk amidst the flames
they will brand me with the iron of shame
yet still i realize, in this personal inferno, that

to live
is to live eternally.

The author's comments:
this was originally a response to an excerpt from "Dante's Inferno" but it turned into a bit more.

The frightened but determined voice carries this poem upward from despair toward transcendent through a careful and thorough engagement with the power of the language. Teenink .com does the author no favors when they lay out a poem by first cutting it in half--but it survives through its own power anyway. BRAVO! What's next?
