- What Matters
As I sit here patiently
Waiting for my turn, for my name to be called
I look around and take notice
Of those sitting uncomfortably close to me
And I have an epiphany...
So many demographics represented...
One person is about to be told they are cancer free
For the first time in years
And they no longer have anything so worry about
Meanwhile another will be informed
That they have approximately six months to live
And that they should spend it wisely.
One woman is about to find out
That in nine months her dreams of motherhood will all come true
And she will be bringing home a beautiful bundle of joy
Meanwhile another will be told
That she will never be able to conceive a child of her own
And should seriously consider adoption.
One individual is about to discover
That they've been dying since birth
All because of bad genetics thanks to their ancestry
Meanwhile another curses their hereditary traits
And tries to alter them through unnecessary means
Taking their own health for granted.
One set of parents is about to learn
That their child won't be able to see their faces or hear their voices
By her thirteenth birthday through the fault of God alone.
Another pair is about to play God with money
By manipulating the gene pool of the fetus
And creating the disgustingly perfect designer baby.
One mistake is about to be made
That will change a person's life forever
Wrong medication; wrong treatment; wrong surgery
While another will pave the way for innovation
Of new medicines, new procedures, new operations
Changing the future of patients forever.
