& after their stark white bones

are stripped of their coat of hue

our flesh, too, leaches its color,

veins licked dry since human thirst

is more than the reef can quench

no matter how many rivers we cry

hoping our reflections tint a shade bluer

they cannot swathe our wounds

bleeding saltwater, scales and our disregard.

once our self-betrayal pays a price in

a decade’s catch and the lives of ten fishermen

the sea’s wide net has stolen our breath

spent on thieving statues from the waters

that kept only what we

taught it to take.
