Sunset over the River
The evening light is like a golden glow.
The water’s calming motion is the most
Beautiful thing that I have ever seen,
As it flows in waves across my sight.
But that's what I wish I could see and feel.
Yet as I stand above and look far down,
At the rough waves flowing different ways,
A new realization comes to me.
Maybe this is beautiful after all,
Not all beauty has to come from total peace,
Maybe roughness can be good for a time.
And now as I watch the waves I say:
Rough is good — what’s wrong with that thought?
Peace is not the only beauty sought.

I wrote this piece while watching the sunset over the Hudson River, a moment that felt like one of New York City’s rare pockets of beauty to me.
