Does He Know?
I watch him
As he talks,
loudly
Leading the conversation using his torn-up hands
He doesn’t realize he’s doing it
Oblivious
Nor does he realize
His voice could practically be heard,
From every room in the house
It echoes off the walls,
Bounces and booms
Until the room feels small
Too small to hold his voice
I doubt he knows
He looks over at me and stares
A pause
The room begins to grow
Large again
It's almost as though,
He was reading my thoughts,
My brain
Pointing hazely green lasers into my eyes
Stealing information from my head
Like a thief
Robbing a bank
During broad daylight
He could tell what I was thinking
He always can
A hidden superpower,
a mind reader
Quietly disguised
As a father
This is something he does know
He twitches his crooked nose
Then offers me a favor
Something he knows I want
Before I had even asked
Obviously
He gives in
Like he always does
Sometimes I wonder
Does he know what the word “no” is?
I doubt it
I could ask,
But he’d probably say “yes”
I guess we’ll never know.

I tried to incorporate two very prominent qualities my dad has.
Not being able to say “no”
Slightly unselfaware, he’s always kind of in his own world
I based this poem around him not “knowing” certain things, or his ability never to say “no”.
I also include a part of something he does “know”, which is me. I think out of all the people in my life, he definitely knows me the best, which is why I included that part.
