"If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever." - Thomas Aquinas

Is magic real
in those impossible depths?
Do you still descend
knowing only more lies below?

What left behind dreams
can you never find again?
Do you still descend
knowing you can never return?

Do you hear
the heartbeat of the world?
Do you hear
those who came before?
Do you hear
those you left behind?

Does prancing through the lilies few
find in you a newer hue?
Or do your dreams all fade to blue,
a blue of reclusive acceptance?

The sun seems ever far but
you won’t stop going down
down
down
down
until you find your glory. Or something more hollow.

The lack of font size leaves out the font size descending as the final downs are played out. As for inspiration, after reading the final currently-published chapter of a manga Made in Abyss, I couldn't help but write about it. Revolving around the Abyss, a seemingly infinite hole in the ground that explorers and adventurers alike travel to for their exploits. The only caveat: You can never return to the surface after reaching far enough down due to the curse of the Abyss, decompression sickness, similar to the Benz but worse tenfold. Written from the perspective of one non-adventurer on the edge of the Abyss who has seen so many descend and never return.
