Liquid
She was a liquid;
Flowing, running, fluid.
No mold to fill, she’d spill
Over the edges and through the cracks,
Free.
Her river currents pulled you
From the sandy sea floor.
Her cool streams
Not only kept you buoyant,
But kissed the tips of your toes
And billowed your golden hair in her bubbles,
Making you shine.
She quenched your dry thirst,
Flourished your cacti,
Replenished the mouths of your desert birds.
Though her brook breathed life back into you,
You sought others to sip from
Once you drained her sweet brook dry.
While you still floated at the surface of the liquid,
Basking in the sun,
Enjoying the cool kiss of her ripples at your toes every so often,
She gasped for air;
Lifeless at the bottom of her own liquid.
Your gaze went straight through her.
As if all she really was
Just a little puddle,
Her sprinkling drizzling should have turned
Into a tumultuous downpour.
Her calm ripple should have erupted
Into a vast tidal wave.
But it didn’t.
Your scorching flame
Evaporated her every last drop.
Should’ve just left you on the sandy sea floor.
Should’ve just left your desert dry.
You drowned her
In her own tears.
