Here, and Not

Awakened through a static buzz of alarms, presents 2 choices

Leave the void, scatter the energy you possess

Passion guides fear, do not let yourself miss out

A path is manifested, though it’s shaded to some

Time flows forward, regret follows its tail

It all catches up, or you cut it in two

Ecstatic as it all attracts

Fate disappears, desire stripped away

Value is harvested like honey from a bee

The hardest workers are just not as it seems

Every door is open, yet no one comes out

Set in a daze for a reward, growing faded as days go by

Peeking through the window, skyscrapers and highways are seen

Identical buildings stacked against each other, no room for green

Rain harmonizes against the metal roofs, making tapping sounds

As seasons fly past, dogs and cats grow their coats for warmth

People are the same whether it’s practical for them or not

A heavy fur coat does just about the same as a warm cozy sweater

Snowflakes fall down, except these are presented the best from nature’s ways

Not one is created even remotely the same, with infinite patterns of frosted lines

So that makes one wonder, we are uniquely alike

The bitter crisp air in the morning soothes the heat and stress

The cool breeze is nice and brings the atmosphere to life

Out the door you go, except it’s special this time

Seeing the world in its beauty, you have to appreciate the art

Every moment has opportunity you just need to get a different view

As simple as it seems, only a few can understand

The fruit on the trees can last you for breakfast

The seeds can feed you for many years

You must have patience, as not everything comes quick

Failure is all around, just not in ways you would think

Lumberjacks harvest logs, turning them into golden-brown planks

Either selling them right then and there in the forest

Or hauling them to the cities for the added effect of scarcity

Any way you can, and any way you will

You must think think about options even out of your reach

For that will make fortune, and nothing can compare

Being smart is entirely different and you need to know how

The author's comments:

My name is Reagan, I like writing poetry and this piece was created in my creative writing class. This poem was originally created in late September of 2022, and I have revised and updated my poem as of late January 2023. I believe this poem would make a great fit on TeenInk because I put lots of creativity into it and it would fit right in with the other free verse poems on here. Thank you for considering my poem.
