Dear Diet Coke
There you sit
On my nightstand, your ice begins to melt
Condensation warps the wood and your carbonation slowly goes flat
How long will you sit there?
I’ll forget to throw you away every time I leave my room
You’ve seen me sit in my bed doing homework
How many episodes of Criminal Minds will you watch?
How many times will I be yelled at for not having thrown you away?
Mold begins to grow as you hide in the back corner of my nightstand being forgotten
The day comes
I clean my room
How long has it been?
Who knows?
Long enough that I stare at you and shake my head
“How could I have left this here so long?”
I think to myself I pick you up and examine you in disgust
I take you to the sink and dump you out as I look away
“Mom, will you grab me a Diet Coke from 7/11?” I ask
“Sure honey”
Suddenly you’re back
Watching me
Slowly losing any signs of the crisp, cold, life you once had
There you sit, again
Warm
Flat
Forgotten
