cat in a [box]
i was once trapped
now i am not
freed from my box
unchained and unbound
newfound confidence in life
grasping the light
reaching the highest highs
chasing new dreams
just like a cat
[i was once free]
[now i am not]
[trapped in my box]
[emotions entrap me]
[belittled at every corner]
[no sign of the light]
[shrouded in darkness]
[searching for escape]
[just like a prison]
schrödinger once theorized
about a cat in a box
i am both
i am free to live
while trapped in my box
i am trapped in my box
while free to live
it's not until
i take a look inside
that i decide
what i am
am i free?
am i trapped?

The inspiration behind my piece is a theory, "Schrodinger's Cat," which states that an object can be two states at once, but it is not until the object is observed will anyone know what state the object is in. I mainly believe this poem is about transitions in life, where one can be satisfied with new changes, but can also have terrible feelings along with this change. What inspired me the most, however, was gender dysphoria and the emotions that come along with gender transition. I know someone dear to me who struggles with their transition and wanted to capture those conflicting emotions. These emotions won't be resolved, however, until you decide what you are: are you free, or are you trapped. Emotions are complicated, but remember you can influence your emotions. And always remember, no matter how you feel, there is always someone there for you!
