What Does it Mean to Feel?
What are emotions? It seems no one really understands
What it’s like to “feel” something, really feel it in your heart.
But I know what that feels like, I feel it every day.
And sometimes I feel like an outsider for doing so.
I keep hearing things like “Men don’t cry!” or, “be a man and take it!”
But I’ll stare you in the face, and I’ll tell you, “no”.
A world without emotions is a world without hope.
Real men do cry, at least, I know I do.
We feel emotion, but we’re taught to repress it.
No wonder so many teens are plagued by depression.
We’re told to suck it up, to tough it out, to power through,
So the emotions build up, until they can’t be contained,
Spilling out, overflowing, but we still try to internalize.
That just makes it worse, it’s a never-ending cycle.
I’ve been called weak, just for daring to feel,
I’ve been ridiculed just for daring to be different.
I’ve tried to be my real self, be a true human being,
But no one wants to see that at all.
They don’t want to see pain, they don’t want to care,
Because it’ll remind them of themselves, of their own problems
So they try to take me out of their sight.
I make them question the things they were taught,
Because I was made to break walls, to never back down.
When I see something that’s not right, I will fight to fix it.
My words will shake the earth, but I can’t force you to listen,
If you wish to be blind to destiny, so be it.

I wrote this because I wanted to break down barriers about mental health and well-being. I feel like I put my own emotions into this.
