Magic
8:32 P.M.
A slightly crowded 7/11
Fluorescent lights shine above
Large windows line the front wall
Reflecting a dimly lit parking lot
An outdated song playing quietly in the background
An elderly woman exclaiming loudly at the young cashier
Attempts to pay only a quarter
For a 75 cent fountain drink
Two people mill around the aisles
One sifting between the sour candy options
One examining the prices of baby formula
The woman’s yells gets louder
Her demands more intense
The cashier yells back
Angry voices ricochet off the product lined shelves
The two people look up
Glancing towards the woman
Then towards the cashier
Eyebrows raised in amusement
Eyes widened in dismay
And before they return down to their feet
They briefly meet from across the top of the aisle
Creases in the corner of both eyes turn upwards
Unsaid jokes traveling through the space between them
For a split second they are lifelong friends
The kind that know each other so well they can finish each other's sentences
Two stand up comedians
Smiling at each other while a joke erupts a crowd into laughter
Two late night show hosts
Both sitting on set
Interviewing a celebrity
Live audience to watch
The imaginary vision suddenly clears
The crowds laughter fading into that same radio song
Both people glance away
Continuing with their life
Cashier finally giving in
Taking the quarter
The woman’s swearing subsides
Everyone involved soon to forget
The invisible magic that took place
In the slightly crowded 7/11
At 8:32 P.M.
