To Be a Squirrel

The squirrel is free

It runs and leaps

Branch to branch, tree to tree

Unaware or without care

That it could ever fall

Even work is play

All is fun every day

But to a squirrel a bird is free

Without the weight of gravity

Up a tree a squirrel must go

Falling is the smallest thing

Compared to dog or cat or road

But the bird that flies so high

By beast or road will never die

But is a bird stuck in the sky?

For if it lands outside a tree

Surely then that bird would die

If a bird can only watch and flee

Is that bird then truly free?

The birds that fly above so high

Can seldom rest or touch the ground

Where everybody else is bound

But people explore land and sea

And fly the sky and cut down tree

We create and we destroy

A bird is shot by a young boy

He might live to eighty three

But still to him the squirrel is free
