The Cookout
The sky is a clear vibrant blue,
summer breezes bring the smells.
The scents of foliage around me
And the smell of charcoal.
Family is over for the 4th,
cousins and uncles visiting town.
The main course: cheeseburgers
An American classic.
The sight of the patties on the grill
means the festivities have started.
Soon it will be time to eat,
the hunger from the day setting in.
Dinner time comes,
the food is done.
A cheeseburger cooked to perfection.
Just the way i like it,
just plain cheese with ketchup.
The fries compliment with such ease
The burger tastes as good as the evening has been,
and brings that taste only homemade could give.
I savor the meal as i know it will be gone
and there are no seconds here.
The meal is over,
it's time for family to leave.
I say my goodbyes and return to my room,
sitting with nothing to do but think.
The meal was amazing,
But the people were better.
I wish I could have both again.
