The Other Side of the Dorm Door
When we would stutter—because we were too excited to speak
When we would get to school late—because of the snow
When we would speak—through the walls of our rooms
Now I stutter with no one to make my sentence complete
Now I arrive to school early with a wave goodbye from your car door
Now I can only reach you from the door of your dorm
Now why can I not turn the last page?
Now why am I not blinded by 11:30 headlights as I fall asleep on the couch?
Now why is there an empty seat at the table?
