Favorite Quote:
The way people treat you is a reflection of them, not you.

Sunshine beaming and slipping through

the cracks of the branches and leaves

The ducks swim, cradled by the heat

and the popsicle stick lays beside

the light pink towel sprawled out

She looks up from her book with a smile

Water rippling and chilling in the rapids

of colorado in the autumns end,

The leaves are against the earth

and the ground is losing it’s warmth

Animals burrow away and the wings fly

If the world changes and gets quiet

She’ll still be there with doleful eyes

Mother’s children are asleep under trees

Powdered houses and tiny footprints

Twinkling lights accompany rosy cheeks

Long nights, burning candles, warm bundles She strokes your hair and holds you close

Long petals and a sniffling of the nose

Wings come back,dreams are over

Her ears hold a flower she picks

She uses them each night, and never dares

To open her mouth, her tongue has thorns

She contorts herself to be the one for you

Your steady companion will never leave

The author's comments:

This piece weaves innocence and themes of savior complexes and the cycle of abuse, when things start out great, get bad, and it seems to get better but it’s all an illusion. This paints the picture of a devoted young girl who will stay through it all and it ultimately shows she never had her own self when she was with him and the longer she stays there, the picture on the outside is prettier and deemed to be beautiful and perfect. When “loyal and healthy” relationships are broken but nobody can tell at first glance.
