grief for flightless birds
there is a dead
bird outside of my house,
just sitting on the mulch.
his wings are crumpled
into a calamity of a skeleton,
the haunting sound of
crushing bones.
he is still trying to fly, feathers
outstretched and reaching out
for a breeze.
the grave made by dropped twigs
is long gone by these hot summer
nights. he was not mourned, the
bird lost in the trees, he was not
seen splintered across the
dirty ground.
some sort of story, action-hero
fate littered with flawed human
empathy. this bird, cold as he is,
is the lesson thrown down from
the skies themselves.
