speaking in flower
I have never seen a jasmine
flower or held it in my palm but if by chance I did
I already know its perfume would be nostalgic
& I would sit, pulling petals to the tune of
loves me loves me not
& I would know sensual
-ity for the first time,
something deeper than ornamental
Love, that single-syllable
scentless-detergent
thing that claims to live
in poems and boys and truth
but actually is vagabond
-ing between New York & LA,
carrying hope in a kerchief,
missing the touch of familiar hands
missing the familiar
of a jasmine
flower settling into a palm
for the first time.
