Beauty
Society’s definition of beauty never quite correlated with mine
The dictionary defines beauty as a spectrum of qualities that please one’s aesthetic senses
Society links beauty to those with enthralling eyes and petite, delicate features; those with captivating looks and defined figures
For some, these characteristics are enough to declare a person as beautiful
Yet; Beauty is not merely found in any, physically attractive person
I see beauty through a different lens
There are things I find beautiful in every person I know
At times, I wish these people could see all of the little things that make them beautiful
We don't ever realize how much our inner beauty shines through on those around us
I reckon that I could list an entire dictionary’s worth of traits I admire, traits found within each and every one of my friends
We seem to acknowledge that beauty is subjective and that one man’s trash may very well be another man’s treasure,
Yet we don’t consider our own worth and value in the eyes of not only the world, but ourselves
If we could get even a small glimpse into how beautiful we appear when we ramble on about topics we are interested in, or when we helplessly laugh a few decibels too loud, or when we restlessly wait for a loved one at the airport so that the second we see them we’ll hurry towards them in need of a hug,
We would see how beautiful we are in motion and in life
We cannot let society’s cookie cutter standards of beauty influence how we see ourselves
When we attempt to categorize ourselves among the hierarchy of people in the world or assign ourselves numbers as if we are contestants in a beauty pageant, we condone the victory of society’s definition of beauty
Individuality is beautiful
Authenticity is beautiful
Society’s definition of beauty is not beautiful
I wrote this piece as a reminder to not let society's standards and demands influence the way in which we view ourselves. It is so important to undermine the aspect of physical beauty and value beauty deep within ourselves. Beauty comes in all forms!
