Aphids
Staring into the stillness of my
grandma’s garden
Like lions leaning towards the
ground in anticipation to pounce
I watch the way the wind
washes away the topsoil
Revealing shriveled roots
And colonies of rolly pollies
Dissolving wilted remains
I appreciate the aphids
That swarm the stems of her flowers
And suck the sap from every leaf
With its head
towering above those
below them
The agapanthus on occasion
must be humbled
