What To Say

It all just feels like a lot on my chest,

Sometimes I don’t know what to say.

Worried about whether or not the future kids

Will have a planet where they can run, jump, and play.

Irreversible climate damage is inevitable.

The planet is dying, I’m constantly told.

The ice caps are melting, the forests are dying.

Will any of it still be here when I’m old?

Hurricanes in the winter and snow in April.

Fires are burning bigger and faster.

Remember the days of four distinct seasons?

Not anymore. We are in the midst of a climate disaster.

I try my best to cut back on my single use plastics but

Corporations keep dumping their trash in the oceans.

And filthy fossil fuels polluting the air,

I can’t help but feel all kinds of emotions.

I shut off my lights when I’m not in the room.

I stopped getting a lid with my latte.

Every little bit helps, but it’s so demoralizing,

Because some people still treat the earth like an ashtray!

How many more times are we going to have to vote?

For our politicians to realize that this is urgent!

We are ones that are going to have to fix it!

We are running out of time and need a resurgence!

Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Imagine if the earth treated us this way?

This planet is the only one that we’ve got.

That is all I have to say.

This is a poem I wrote about the immense anxiety I feel surrounding climate change.
