21st Century No Man's Land
We were a peaceful people,
weren’t we?
Our quiet noise was left
unheard,
unnoticed.
Our allies are strongly naive,
for we are east
and they are west.
Our neighbor is loudly cunning.
His noise,
it brings a deadly silence with it.
We hear him,
the world hears him,
yet we heard nothing too late.
We were a peaceful people,
weren’t we?
Cities filled with deafening empty homes
as people flee.
But the brave, they stay,
they wait.
With their few words they make the
world listen.
A fearful resilience as they bleed for
freedom.
The guns they raise stand no chance,
yet they stand
unwavering.
Afraid, for they know the price they’ll pay,
for no man’s land
is a dangerous game.
Experience begins to build with each passing day;
a prayer is whispered.
In desperate bravery soldiers rise
defying bombs
and bullets.
Where have our allies gone?
With the Ghost of Kiev our skies stay blue;
snipers on high to protect the grounds
and rain their strength
without fear.
No fear.
You cannot have fear here.
For their people and their home
they will fight
as if they’ve already won.
We were a peaceful people
weren’t we?
Maybe those in history were right–
it truly is war
for peace.

I watched the news show the Russians line the Ukrainian border. I watched the headlines of the first attack. I watched the politicians of my country say they can to nothing. It hurts me to witness an innocent country be littered with death and terror. This is not my story, but theirs.
