the car passes down at speeds of light

shining white pinpricks streaking through the night

forehead cool against the window’s glass

a reflection gazing back of times past

the night grows colder, the car goes quieter

a journey moving onwards, headlights brighter

a pause on the roadside, calloused hands clasped

stepping out onto gravel, to see the world elapse

This piece was inspired by one of my family's trips out to the National Parks, in this case Shenandoah. My father, brother and I rolled the windows down of our car and drove through the Skyline Drive at about 11 o'clock at night - the feeling of that drive as the stars flew by overhead and the forest grew darker sticks with me, and this poem is a reflection of that.
