Better in Memory
A white knight in shining armor,
Riding in valiantly to slay all my demons
And tell me everything will be perfect,
I will be perfect.
An all-knowing goddess,
Sharing knowledge with a smile.
Inspiring and encouraging,
Never wavering in herself, never herself hurting.
But now I can’t help but see the truth behind those once perfect visages.
A broken knight with a wounded soul beneath the visor of his helmet,
Forgetting that the only way to stop history from repeating itself is to lay down his own sword.
A hesitant goddess with a tarnished past,
Wings beating ceaselessly to keep her family afloat in this sea made treacherous by unspoken problems.
In the end, they’re nothing but human.

This piece is about the humanization of parental figures in the eyes of their children once the later reach young adulthood. It is, in my experience, an impactful and melancholy experience, to realize that one's parents are just as human as one's self, as imperfect and flawed as everyone else.
